Newcastle International Airport - North Apron Extension

Newcastle International Airport Limited North Apron Extension

Client: Newcastle International Airport
Value: £ 750,000
Duration: 16 weeks
Completion: May 2007

Project Brief
To enlarge the existing North Apron by a further 7,000 squaremetres in order to increase the number of aircraft stands. Stands 18 and 19 were to be constructed from new, with stands 21 to 23 extended and repositioned on the new Apron.

Background to the Contract
Expansion of the Airport is an ongoing project based on the projected increase in traffic and passengers that in turn requires more space for arrivals and departures.

The Works
In order to enlarge the existing North Apron a previously undeveloped, greenfield area of the site was excavated to an average depth of 1250mm. This required the removal of existing lighting columns (and their reinforced bases), AGL lighting and associated cabling. Reinstatement comprised a varying depth of recycled Capping Layer 6F5 followed by 150 mm depth of granular Sub-base Type 1. Machine laid CBM4, 300 mm deep (5100 Tonnes), was used as the Base Layer then overlaid with 75 mm deep HMB35 Binder Course (1500 tonnes) and a 50mm thick layer of Densiphalt grouted Macadam which included a "black pigment" that the Airport specified so that the new extension works matched the existing asphalt surface. (860 tonnes).

Associated works included:
The erection of 6 No. lighting columns. The original contract required 6 No. new hinged lighting columns 20m in height to be installed. After consultation with the Airport however, and to provide value engineering, it was agreed to re-use the original un-hinged 18m lighting columns and upgrade the actual lighting unit from a 1200w unit to a 2000w unit. The lighting columns were planted on new 7m3 reinforced concrete bases.
The installation of almost 100m of new 300mm Gatic Ultraslot slot drain, that was outfalled into the existing drainage system, and two new Gatic F900 Ultraslot heavy duty 1500mm x 700mm Access Points. The provision of new and replacement AGL lighting which consisted of LED centre lighting and stand lighting and included coring the completed surfacing in order to install accepting pots. New 890mm x 1265mm Stand signs and indicator boards were also erected at stands 19 and 21.
The erection of approximately 30m of Armco safety barrier. New surface markings to the stands comprised Hold Bars, Stop Bars, Stand Arrows and yellow and white centrelines. Before any new markings were placed approx 1700m of existing markings were removed using a mechanical scabbler.

Quality
Tarmac National Contracting's Technical Team had a permanent on-site presence and handled the Quality Control aspects of all operations, including the day-to-day liaison with NIAL's Project Manager. Paul Evans, Senior Technical Supervisor, was permanently based on site with Charles Ford, our Technical Manager, having an overview and visiting role.
The Client viewed this as a positive move. Newcastle Airport's technical design team were based in Denmark and to have this additional service available to the contract, with the ability to make quick and informed decisions, ensured that any technical issues were dealt with in a quick and professional manner without causing a delay to the contract period.

Site Security
Because of heightened security at UK airports Tarmac made the decision to be positive and help our client with the necessary security operations. A contract of this size involved a huge amount of vehicle movements to and from Airfield.
It was agreed with Airport personnel that Tarmac would supply a gate man who would be responsible for all access and egress to the site. The gateman attended an Airport security and operational training course prior to the works commencing.
Adjacent to the existing security gate Tarmac created an additional area where there was sufficient room to have a vehicle holding area. Here, all vehicles and staff were inspected and the information logged. All delivery vehicles were given a haulier induction to the site and were also given a windscreen display card so that the gateman knew that they had previously attended the site.
All the above measures were regularly audited by Airport operational personnel for compliance. This was a pro-active approach taken by Tarmac and one which was gratefully adopted by Newcastle Airport as it aided the Airport's own operational staff in their day to day running of security.

"Despite a tight programme and airport operational restrictions imposing further constraints on the contractor, the flexibility and cooperation of Tarmac together with that of all parties involved ensured the required completion dates for each of the phases were all successfully achieved and within budget"
David Edwards - Project Manager, Newcastle International Airport
