Tarmac National Contracting has transformed the heart of a Yorkshire beauty spot with an innovative renewal scheme.

A unique sundial providing a new focal point for visitors was created as part of the project to re-pave old pedestrian zones in Hebden Bridge.

Working in partnership with Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council, Tarmac used more than 2,000m2 of original materials, such as York Flagstone and granite.

The giant sundial, measuring eight metres across, was constructed using paving stones and has an inscription designed by a local stone mason.

Since starting work on the scheme last year, Tarmac has removed existing surface materials, laid duct runs for new street lighting, installed footways, kerbs, new drainage gullies and tree planters.

Additional work was carried out to restore a car park area in the town centre, making space for an outdoor market and creating a stepped wave feature where visitors can sit and view the historic bridge over Hebden Water.

Contracts manager Craig Broadhead said: “It is a pleasure to be involved in the design and delivery of this scheme, which has been generally well received by local residents and visitors. The work has been challenging and I feel the quality of the finished product is a compliment to all those employed on the site.”
