Norwich Airport Runway

Norwich Airport - Runway Rehabilitation Works

Client: Norwich International Airport Limited
Value: £ 390,000
Duration: 4 weeks
Completion: March 2005

Project Brief
1 To overlay Runway 09 Threshold with 50mm bituminous surfacing, install new AGL lighting, carry out delethalisation measures to the runway end and install new surface markings. This work had to be completed using weekend restrictions to the runway.
2 To excavate and dispose on site, the existing concrete construction of Taxiway Charlie and replace with 200mm wet lean and 350mm PQ Concrete and install new taxiway surface markings. This work was completed during normal working hours.

Runaway 09 Threshold

As the runway had to remain fully operational the works were programmed for completion in two weekends during a period of restricted flying. Tarmac were given possession of the working area at 21.30hrs on Friday evening and were required to hand the area back by 05.00hrs on Monday morning.

Actual works included delethalisation of the runway end as a safety measure in case of overshoot of aircraft. This involved casting 55m wide ramps across the full width of the runway using no fines concrete, putting topsoil and turf on top of the concrete and 'pinning' the turf in place with 500mm mild steel pegs. A mesh was then placed over the whole area of turf and the mesh held in place with plastic pegs.

New AGLs were installed at the runway end (to an existing feed at the side of the runway) with replacement AGLs positioned along the runway centreline. All existing centerline AGLs were taken out and sandbags placed in the resultant void. The new surfacing then buried the bags, which were subsequently re-located and excavated. New AGLs were installed and fed from the existing wiring.

Ramps were planed into the existing surfacing to create tie ins prior to machine laying a 50mm deep overlay comprising 600 Tonnes of DBM binder course (as a 15mm deep regulating layer), and 950 Tonnes of 0/6mm Masterpave surface course 35mm deep.

All bituminous materials were supplied from Tarmac's asphalt plants at Cavenham and Bittering, with the material being laid in echelon to ensure that no problems with longitudinal joint were encountered. Upon completion all replacement runway surface markings were applied.

Taxiway Charlie

The work to Taxiway Charlie was undertaken during normal working hours and in close proximity to taxiing aircraft. In total, 56 No. worn out PQ concrete bays were broken out using a 360° excavator. The concrete was taken to a stockpile, positioned within the confines of the Airport where it was to be crushed for re-use in other schemes.

Replacement material comprised 350m3 of hand laid 200mm deep wet lean concrete and 780m3 of new PQ concrete laid at a depth of 350mm. 14 No. of these bays were additional works instructed after commencement of the contract.

Movement joints and induction cuts were positioned every 5 bays. A longitudinal expansion joint was constructed at the junction with the flexible surfacing

C & H Quickmix, a Tarmac JV company, supplied and delivered all the ready mixed concrete to site.

An additional area of 50mm deep inlay, 3m wide, using Masterpave was laid adjacent to the new concrete bays against Stand No. 7.

Site Security

Tarmac was required to devise a security pass system to ensure compliance with the client's stringent requirements. The airport gate security staff checked clip on photo ID cards, and then once inside the gate airport personnel escorted all vehicles to site.
