Value: £150,000
Duration: 7 weeks

Project Brief
To construct a new 2178m2 Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) on an existing sports field within Emmanuel College. In addition to a high tolerance finished playing surface, the MUGA required full floodlighting and a 3m high ball fence.

Background to the Contract
Tarmac Limited National Contracting were appointed by Emmanuel College to design and construct a high specification MUGA on the college site. Tarmac in turn appointed Hellens Sports, to provide technical and design advice and to undertake ancillary works. Tarmac and Hellens have a successful track record of working together to deliver all weather sports facilities for a variety of Clients utilising our Laserpave system which uses state of the art laser equipment to control the level of the screed on the paving machine and can achieve surface level tolerances of ± 3mm. The system uses a remote tripod mounted self levelling rotating laser 'transmitter' and two laser receivers fitted to each side of the screed on a tracked paving machine. The receivers are linked to the screed levelling control on the paving machine and make continuous adjustments to the screed as the material is laid.

The Works
Following site preparation work, a 300mm thick layer of Type 3 reduced fines Granular Sub base was laid, with the final 50mm laid using the Laserpave system. This layer provided the platform for the permeable asphalt layers and allowed drainage of water through to the subsoil. This layer was then was then covered by a 40mm thick layer of open graded binder course followed by a 25mm thick layer of 6mm nominal size open graded surface course. On completion of the surfacing work, a specialist subcontractor was employed to apply an acrylic paint system to the finished surface which provided a semi matt, anti-slip finish and pitch/court markings.
