Tarmac Quarrying
Due to the geology of the UK there are concentrations of aggregate types. For instance, in the South East there are large amounts of sand and gravel deposits and no major crushed rock quarries. The Pennines has many carboniferous limestone quarries.
Using fast rail loading facilities, we can supply aggregates from some of our larger quarries to major customers and depots efficiently, with minimum impact on the local environment.
Aggregate flow in the UK shows that large amounts of crushed aggregates are imported into the South East and to a lesser extent into the North West (e.g Manchester and Liverpool).
The south east uses dredged sand and gravel with rock imported from the Mendips (limestone) and Leicestershire (granite). In addition, ship borne imports from Scotland, Ireland and the continent (France).

Due to the increased demand of high skid resistant aggregates (65-68 Polished Stone Value [PSV] Gritstone) for asphalt surface course mixtures, the quarrying of these aggregates, found in South Wales, has increased significantly.
