SCHOOL GARDEN IN WALSALL GIVEN A SPEEDY MAKE OVER

Graduates from Tarmac have given an Alan Titchmarsh style makeover to a school garden in Walsall, and have created an inspirational area for science, art and poetry in just one day!

The project has been made possible through a partnership between Business in the Community's employee volunteering programme, Cares and Walsall's New Deal.

Altogether 14 graduates from Tarmac rolled up their sleeves to dig, rake and plant the area, as well as erecting a new gazebo and building a rockery area.

Team leader on the project, graduate Rob Palmer, said: "We're really pleased to get involved in this fantastic project. We feel that we've created something very special - it's been planned down to the very last detail to ensure that we get the most out of the area, and it's been all hands to the pump to make over the whole area in just one day!"

Neighbourhood Nature, a partnership project between Walsall's New Deal and The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and Black Country, has been working with Christchurch Primary School over the past two years to develop their wildlife area as an educational resource.

Julia Morris, project officer, said: "Tarmac's involvement has enabled our vision for the garden to become a reality. This is a wonderful initiative to be a part of with a positive outcome for all the partners involved, especially Christ Church Primary School."

Mrs Lowe, head teacher at Christ Church Primary School said: "The garden will be a fantastic teaching resource and learning area for the pupils. We've had an unused garden area at the school for a while, and it's fantastic that this area has been so quickly developed into a place that we can use straight away. We're looking forward to Spring when the new plants start to come through!"
